The University of North Carolina Wilmington, or UNCW for short, is a public, coeducational university located in Wilmington, which is the county seat of New Hanover County, situated in the US state of North Carolina, with a population estimated at a number of more than 100 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. Wilmington is also the principal city of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area, which covers New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties, in southeastern North Carolina, having more than 347 000 people, living within its limits.
UNCW first opened its doors in September, 1947, first starting as Wilmington College. It became a senior college in July, 1963, six years later, the institution adopting its current name, becoming the 5th university in the University of North Carolina system. In August, 1977, UNCW received authorization to offer its first graduate programs at the master’s level, the university currently having an enrollment of 12 000 students, to whom it also offers 73 bachelor’s degrees, 30 master’s and 2 doctoral degrees.
According to Forbes magazine, UNCW is 2nd among the public universities in North Carolina, after UNC Chapel Hill, U.S. News & World Report placing it on the 6th place among top 10 public master’s universities in the south for the past decade. Kiplinger also named the university 3rd "Best Value" for in-state students among public universities and 25th "Best Value" for in-state students among public universities, in North Carolina, as well as 35th "Best Value" for out-of-state students among public universities in USA.
The athletic teams from the University of North Carolina Wilmington are known as the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, who compete in 19 varsity sports for men and women, in NCAA’s Division I Colonial Athletic Association. The Seahawks have experienced victory in many of their sports, in the past years, including in baseball, in which they made several recent trips to the NCAA Regionals, in men’s basketball, in which they won the CAA Championship in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2006, and in men’s swimming, in which they won the CAA title for 9 consecutive years, from 2002 through 2010, to name a few of their most notable achievements.
Among the most resonant names on the list of notable UNCW alumni, there are: Jean-Paul Chreky - film producer and director, Jay Dalton - Physicist/Researcher Duke University, Field Emission Utilizing Carbon Nanostructures, Tyler Nisbet - film writer, producer, and director, Hon.
